driving along the Gunflint Trail. Wildlife is abundant in these parts, and it is not uncommon to see deer, moose, fox, bear, and assorted smaller critters crossing the road. In the winter, take your time. Moose often come up to the road to lick the salt, and the sight of a kneeling moose or two in the midst of the Gunflint Trail is a marvelous sight - and perhaps a great photo.
Minnesota Canoeing Vacation
Northern Minnesota is home to the famous Boundary Waters
Canoe Area Wilderness -- the largest canoeing wilderness
in the United States. There are over 1,000 clear water lakes
in this million-plus acre wilderness. It makes up the finest
canoeing area available. With the immense Boundary Waters
and Quetico out your front door you will have thousands
of miles of waterways to explore.
The Boundary Waters is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, maintained by the U.S. Forest Service.
The Quetico Provincial Park is operated by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. The BWCA is in the Laurentian Highlands, with hundreds of deep rocky lakes scoured out by the glaciers centuries ago. Some of the waters flow to the Atlantic and some to the Arctic. This area has the finest lake trout fishing in mid America and is home to a significant moose population. Many of our vacationers prefer to combine lake trout fishing and canoeing for a real wilderness adventure.
